Forging paths through the water

Join us in building weather-independent transport infrastructure.

What We Do

ROBUNC is developing AUV-based underwater transport infrastructure to free transport from its dependence on weather.

The movement of people and goods is heavily affected by weather. In remote islands and rural areas — where regional infrastructure relies on sea and air transport — this is not just a matter of livelihood or economy, but of life itself. The issue is not limited to islands: today's highly optimized logistics and transport networks remain vulnerable to localized, sudden disruptions caused by weather, imposing unnecessary costs on everyone from producer to consumer. On top of this, deepening labor shortages across developed nations and the marked rise in extreme weather are amplifying these problems and bringing weather-dependency into sharp focus.

To address these challenges, we are pursuing the development items below, aiming to deliver weather-independent transport solutions to existing logistics operators.

Fully Autonomous Navigation

Fully autonomous navigation enabled by AI and swarm coordination — requiring no surrounding infrastructure.

Transport-Optimized Vehicle

A vehicle purpose-built for transport — high speed, long range, and large capacity.

Connection Platform

A mobile, flexibly deployable docking platform that autonomously connects underwater and land — independent of surface or port conditions.

What Makes This Compelling

The 4th Mode of Transport — Beyond Land, Sea, and Air

Tackling at its root the weather dependency of transport — something humanity has long accepted as unavoidable.

Physical AI for the Underwater Frontier

Leading the development of AI robotics in the underwater domain — a frontier still largely unexplored.

Technology Centered on Human Flourishing

Opening uncharted territory to sustain and expand the lives in which people feel inner richness.

Who We're Looking For

The roles below are only a small part of what we're hiring for. If you're interested in the technology and business ROBUNC is building, we'd love to hear from you.

Software Engineer / System Architect

Develop autonomous navigation systems that integrate sensor and camera data — augmented by deep learning, deep reinforcement learning, and swarm control — and guidance/control systems for docking with the platform.

  • - ROS2 / C++ product development experience
  • - Autonomous navigation / Sensor fusion experience (automotive, robotics, drones, etc.)
  • - Machine learning implementation experience
  • - Maritime / underwater robotics experience

Hardware Engineer

Design and develop fluid-dynamics-based vehicles achieving high speed, long range, and large payload; lay out sensor placement and select energy sources informed by disciplines such as electrical and mechanical engineering; calibrate equipment in collaboration with software engineers; and design and develop the docking platform and standardized containers.

  • - Robot or drone hardware development experience
  • - Background in electrical and mechanical engineering
  • - Background in acoustic engineering

Message from the Founder

I want to value not only economic prosperity but also inner richness.
Could we shape a future where the world's islands — blessed with rich nature, warm communities, and unique cultures, including my home of Okinawa — grow more economically prosperous than ever before, while preserving what makes them special?
To get there, we need a business that solves the challenges islands face — and that, precisely because it does, can put islands at the center when expanded to other regions.
Holding this hope and question, I turned my attention to the sea surrounding the islands.
By turning the physical properties of water to our advantage and building weather-independent transport, I came to believe, we could dramatically stabilize island life and economic activity — and beyond that, the strengthened resilience of logistics infrastructure would make economic activity smoother and more robust in every region, growing into a massive industry with islands at its core.
A world not separated by the sea, but connected through it.
Underwater cargo transport has been attempted before, but with the rapid recent advances in software — AI most of all — and the increasing precision and miniaturization of hardware, now is the time to take on underwater transport infrastructure.

We are still in the early stages of technical development, but guided by a detailed development plan, we aim to move forward steadily and with momentum — drawing fully on the strengths each of you brings.
ROBUNC was founded in January 2026. We are open not just to early team members, but also to participation as co-founders (with equity).
